Streatham Festival was started in 2002 by Mel Larsen. Just two events were programmed and over 600 audience members turned up.
Now in its 10th year, it has grown into an acclaimed week-long community arts festival with numerous arts events including comedy, film, art, photography, literature, food, music and dance, held in a variety of locations all over Streatham, from bars to churches and parks to youth centres. The Festival attracted over 10,000 people in 2010, with 40 events over nine days, and dozens of volunteers.
The organisation of the Festival is a huge but exciting community-focused enterprise. It’s quite special – with lots of people giving up their time, expertise and energy for free. Of real importance are the board members of the Streatham Festival Association (SFA) who work hard throughout the year to arrange the Festival:
However, this year’s festival would not be possible without the help of Bec Britain, co-ordinator of the 2011 programme and the Big Day Out.
The Festival also needs the involvement, enthusiasm and support of the area’s schools, businesses and organisations.to make it work. Without them we wouldn’t be able to deliver the fabulous events, fun nights out and fantastic atmosphere Streatham so enjoys!
SFA is a company limited by guarantee, Reg No 6829921
We are expecting some of the same popular acts and events this year, plus lots of new ones ! Here’s a taster from last year’s programme (pdf), and from last year’s photo galleries.
SFA wants to say a Big Thank You to everyone who attended the 2010 events, to the performers and artists who captured our attention, the venues for getting into the swing of things, the sponsors and donors for making it all possible and to a wonderful group of volunteers who worked so hard.
